Cliffs of Moher Tours from Dublin

The Timetable on Each Listing

Most listings put 3 to 3.5 hours on the coach each way between Dublin and the west coast. The table reads each tour's own clock times, from the Dublin departure to the drop-off. The rail tour is the outlier: its train back reaches Heuston at 10:10 PM.

Where an operator does not print an arrival time at the cliffs, the cell says so.

Why the Day Is So Long

The official visitor site puts the drive from Dublin at about 4 hours via Limerick. A routing engine gives 261.5 km and 3 hours 21 minutes for the same road with no traffic and no stops, and that gap is the last stretch of two-lane road from Ennis through Ennistymon and Liscannor. The coach listings sit between the two, at 3 to 3.5 hours each way with a comfort stop.

The Wild Rover and Paddywagon coaches have no toilet on board, so those breaks are scheduled, not optional. No tour can shorten the distance. What you choose is how the hours at the far end are split.

Meeting Points and Times

The table reads each operator's own pickup list. Be there 10 to 15 minutes early: the Irish Day Tours and Wild Rover pages ask for it, and the rail tour's train leaves Heuston at 7:00 AM whether you are on it or not. Only the small group collects from hotels.

Early Start or Late Start

The 8:30 AM hotel pickup on the small group tour is the gentlest morning here, and its 90 minutes at the cliffs start at about 3:30 PM, after most coaches have gone. The 6:45 to 7:00 AM starts buy the longer stops: 2 hours at the cliffs on Finn McCools and Wild Rover. If you are staying near Heuston or the quays, Crampton Quay and the Molly Malone Statue are a short walk from Temple Bar.

Five Ways to Fill the Afternoon

Three tours run the Galway loop along the Burren coast, one swaps Galway for Ennis and Limerick, two build the day around Bunratty Castle and one adds a cave and a boat. The table shows what each route adds and where lunch happens, always at your own cost.

The Stops Themselves

The Burren covers around 530 square kilometres broadly defined, with about 250 square kilometres of exposed limestone up to 800 m thick and roughly 325 million years old. Poulnabrone dolmen, the portal tomb on the plateau, was used for burials from about 3800 to 3200 BC. Dunguaire Castle at Kinvara dates to 1520 and has been closed to visitors since 2023, so tours pass or photograph it from outside.

Bunratty Castle's present structure was begun around 1450. The EUR 18 entry is included on the small group tour and the rail tour, while the Paddywagon loop stops for a photo only. In Galway city, the Spanish Arch dates to the 1584 city-wall extension.

Gate and Online Rates

At the gate, admission is EUR 15 for an adult, EUR 12 for students and seniors, EUR 30 for a family, and children 12 and under go free. Booked online, admission starts from EUR 8. Admission covers the visitor centre, the paved paths and viewing areas, O'Brien's Tower access and parking, with no separate tower fee. Groups of 10 or more arriving by coach must book through the groups desk rather than at standard rates, which is how the tours here get their guests in.

The official site does not publish a last admission time, so arrive well before closing if you go on your own.

O'Brien's Tower and the Groups Desk

The Paths at the Visitor Experience

Inside the visitor experience there are 3.5 km of safe designated paths, including an 800 m resurfaced stretch north of O'Brien's Tower and a route to the southern viewing platform. The visitor centre sits at the middle of the site. The official advice is to allow up to 2 hours for a visit, which is exactly what the longest tour stops give you.

Two closures matter. The unofficial clifftop walk from Liscannor to the visitor centre is closed for safety, and the Doolin side of the coastal walk turns back at Surfers Path, short of the visitor centre. No tour, and no independent walker, can do the full coastal route right now.

The Film Connection

Film fans know these cliffs as the Cliffs of Insanity in The Princess Bride (1987). Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) filmed here too, for the sea-cave scene where Harry and Dumbledore hunt a horcrux. Driving from Dublin

The official visitor site puts the drive at about 4 hours via Limerick: the M7 to Limerick, the M18 to Ennis, then the N85 to Ennistymon, the N67 to Lahinch and the R478 through Liscannor. The one barrier toll on that route, on the M7, is €2.30 for a car. Admission is €15 at the gate or from €8 online, and parking is included in it.

Train Plus the 350 Bus

There is no station at the cliffs. Heuston to Galway costs €30.45 single or €33.30 day return for an adult. From Galway Bus Station, Bus Eireann route 350 reaches the Cliffs of Moher coach park in about 1 hour 50 minutes via Kinvara, Ballyvaughan and Doolin, for €13.50 single or €24 day return. From Ennis the same route takes 58 minutes, €10.50 single.

The weekday 350 leaves Galway at 06:00, 07:00, 09:00 and 10:30 among ten daily runs, and the evening buses back from the cliffs to Galway leave at 18:29, 19:57 and 22:08, reaching Galway at 20:34, 21:44 and 23:49. That is too late for most travellers to be sure of a train back to Dublin the same night, so the honest version is a night in Galway or Doolin. The Boat and Cave Day Trip

The boat cruise and Aillwee Cave day trip is the one Dublin tour with a cruise. It runs April to October, leaves the Molly Malone Statue at 6:50 AM and costs $148 with the cruise, the cave and the cliff entry all included. The listing and the operator disagree on the timing: GetYourGuide lists 45 minutes on the boat and 45 on the clifftop, while the operator's page says a 1-hour cruise at about 1:00 PM then about 1 hour on top from about 2:40 PM. Treat it as roughly 45 minutes to an hour on each side.

If the boat cannot sail, the operator swaps in a bird of prey show instead, so the day still runs. The full boat tour guide covers the Doolin cruises in detail.

Cruises from Doolin

Standalone cruises leave Doolin Pier, about 7 km north of the cliffs, seven days a week from March to October. The Doolin Ferry Co cruise runs 45 to 50 minutes and costs €30 for an adult, €15 for a child aged 5 to 12 and €80 for a family of four. The small group tour lists a cliff cruise as not included, at EUR 15 to 28 per person.

The Three Status Levels

The Cliffs of Moher Experience posts a three-level status. Yellow means conditions are hazardous, for example strong winds, and visitors take extra care. Orange means it is too hazardous to visit, with gusts dangerous at the cliff edge.

Red means the centre has closed and anyone on site has been evacuated. The official advice is to check met.ie before you set out, and the weather guide goes through each level.

What the Operators Do When the Weather Turns

The listings state their own fallbacks. The Finn McCools tour may move time from the cliffs to Galway if conditions are bad. The boat cruise day swaps the cruise for a bird of prey show when the boat cannot sail.

Every coach tour in the comparison offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, so a bad forecast is not money lost if you decide in time. The other listings publish no weather rule beyond that, so the 24-hour window is the one lever you control: check the forecast the evening before and cancel then if an orange status is likely.

What to Wear

Met Eireann's averages for Shannon Airport, the nearest long-running station, show at least 1 mm of rain on 11 to 17 days in every month and fog on about 28 days a year. A dry morning in Dublin promises nothing on the Clare coast, so wear a waterproof layer and shoes with grip whatever the forecast, and stay on the paths behind the walls. The coach is warm, the clifftop is not.
